Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together lies a profound examination about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story starts when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
