A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was officially announced, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.
Sudden Shift in Wagers
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the end of January increased in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.
A single trader, which registered on the site in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436,000 from a starting bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market Signals Before News Break
Market statistics shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
However the market's assessment had jumped to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.
"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.
A handful of other individuals also profited tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.
Political Attention Grows
Elected officials are starting to take note.
A new rule put forward on recently seeks to ban federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a market.
